Dr. James McInnis, Lt. (N), MD, CCFP, brings a diverse skill set to family and emergency medicine. He has a decade of experience in emergency and trauma care and sixteen years as a family physician. Beyond medicine, he embraces roles as a dedicated father to four children, an athlete, a lieutenant (N) in the Canadian Armed Forces, a naval reservist, and an active volunteer.
The Early Years Born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada, he grew up immersed in sports, participating in hockey, baseball, tennis, and golf. Notably, he played Junior A hockey and received recognition from the Boston Red Sox for his baseball skills. Even into adulthood, he remained passionate about sports, incorporating weightlifting into his routine. Demonstrating a strong work ethic from a young age, he balanced a paper route at ten with a full-time job at McDonald’s by thirteen. Education, Professional Licensure, and Certifications His educational journey is extensive, starting with a BBA from Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1992. After exploring the United States, he pursued a BSc (Honors) in Biochemistry and Genetics at Dalhousie University, graduating in 1997. Further academic pursuits led to an Epidemiology Certification from Dalhousie University in 2002 and a Doctor of Medicine degree from Dalhousie Medical School in 2004. His internship at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, focused on Emergency and Family Medicine. Professional credentials include the MCC (Licensure of Medical Council of Canada), a Commissioned Rank of Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Navy, the CCFP (Canadian College of Family Physicians), and a subsequent promotion to Lieutenant (N) in the Royal Canadian Navy. Honors and Awards Dr. James McInnis's contributions have earned him numerous accolades, including the Prince Edward Island Top Medical Student Scholarship, the Burke Certificate for Promise in Family Medicine, and a Special Citation for Meritorious Service in the Canadian Armed Forces. Academic Experience He has held various academic roles, including Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Laboratory Studies at Dalhousie University, Senior Post Graduate Clinical Instructor at McMaster University, and Senior Professor and Evaluator at the Canadian Forces School of Physician Assistants in CFB Borden, Ontario. Serving His Country His dedication to service is evident through nine years as a Lieutenant (N) in the Canadian Armed Forces, where he fulfilled roles as a medical officer, disaster response team member, and bio-terrorism medicine consultant. Clinical Experience and Medical Practice He served as an Emergency Physician at McMaster University Hospital before transitioning to Director of Care at Wasaga/Angus Community Health Center – Family Practice. Additionally, he joined the Medical Division of the Canadian Armed Forces as a Class B reservist in 2010. Volunteer Work Volunteering has always been integral to his life, beginning with his involvement at the Barrington Street Shelter in Halifax during medical school. He continued his volunteer efforts at shelters in Hamilton and Toronto, as well as an STD clinic. A Family Man, A Man of Faith He treasures his role as a father to three daughters (ages 24, 19, and 9) and one son (age 22), actively engaging in their lives and supporting their interests. His commitment extends to coaching hockey, assisting with figure skating, and volunteering with his daughter’s dance troop. Dr. James McInnis is also a devout Christian, attending services regularly at Mapleview Christian Church with his children.
